We have been using Seesaw, an online learning journal, to show a sample of work from the classroom. It's a great opportunity for parents to connect to their children's learning by viewing work and writing comments. Many parents have already joined and have posted comments for their second graders to read next week. If you haven't already, please sign up by following this link: https://app.seesaw.me/s/892-488-090. Enjoy!
Last week in math we learned about arrays. We began with a discussion about real life arrays, for example, egg cartons and muffin tins. Arrays are a wonderful way for children to visualize and conceptualize multiplication. We made arrays using fruit loops and writing the number models. We also wrote and told array number stories and played a game called array bingo. Next week we'll continue multiplication by exploring equal groups. We do not expect second graders to memorize their multiplication facts this year. This is something that will be revisited and mastered in third grade.
We began preparing for our Living Statue Gallery project last week. Each second grader has chosen a famous person to study. In the coming weeks he/she will read a biography about the person and take notes to become an expert. We will do different activities associated with the biographies including making timelines and posters. Finally, each second grader will write a speech to deliver at our Living Statue Gallery (April 26, 1:15-2:00pm). On the 26th each second grader will come to school dressed as their person and deliver his/her speech at our gallery. We invite parents to join us. Mrs. Marinho's class will also come to our gallery and we will go to theirs the following day. Most of the work will be done in the classroom. We will send the speeches home several days before to practice reading. The second graders should also compile their costumes at home. It is an exciting project and we are looking forward to it!
A big thank you to Lizzie and her family for taking good care of Cookie over spring break. The family was surprised with how cuddly Cookie is and hot much kale she eats! If you are interested in taking Cookie for the summer (or part of the summer), please let me know.
On Thursday we cooked with pears. We made pear cobbler and crunchy pear salsa. The dishes were delicious. Thank you so much to our parent helpers: Rene Alphonse, Vanessa Copans, Matt Konda, Chris Montgomery, Edith Yokely, and Wei Zhang. We cannot cook without our parent volunteers; we appreciate your help! We have a few more spots available for cooking in May, you can sign up here.
Next week for our word work we will practice words with the soft c sound, like city and celebrate. We will also work on homophones to, two, and too.
