The Living Statue Gallery is this Tuesday from 1:15 to 1:45pm in the 2nd floor Little Lobby. Over the past several weeks the second graders have been busy preparing! They have done research, taken notes, organized their ideas on posters, and written speeches about the famous person they chose to study. Over the weekend, your child was supposed to practice reading his or her speech at least three times. On Monday we will do a "mock living statue gallery" for each other. We will also talk about what makes a good speech: speaking clearly, at a good pace, and loud enough so listeners can hear. It's been a fun project and we are so excited to share our learning with you on Tuesday!
We recently completed a math unit on geometry. We had a lot of fun studying line segments, parallel lines, polygons, 3D shapes, and line symmetry. Through this unit, there were many opportunities for hands on activities. One example of this is a symmetrical self-portrait. The second graders used half photos of themselves to draw the other half of their faces. They used rulers to measure and ensure their drawings were accurate. They turned out really well and will be on display in our classroom soon. In the included photo, children are building polygons. They learned that a polygon is a two dimensional enclosed shape that has straight edges. They each built polygons with various number of sides up to a decagon which has ten sides. On Friday your second grader took home a packet of home links that coincide with this unit. Also included in the packet are home links from the next unit which we will start next week. These papers should be completed at home and do not need to come back to school.
This Thursday we will cook with peppers! We'll make a bell pepper slaw and bell pepper gratin. Thank you to our parent volunteers. This is our second to last cooking session. We have one spot still available for each session so if you'd like to cook with us, please sign up.
Many children have established a routine for reading every night at home and completing his or her book log. This daily book log serves several purposes. It helps children build their reading and writing fluency, helps to establish a routine and ease the "homework transition" for third grade, and promotes responsibility and independence.
If you’re interested in purchasing an ESH yearbook, the deadline is Wednesday, April 27. Teachers and parent volunteers have worked together to create a wonderful reflection of the 2015-2016 school year. There is even an “autograph” page to sign! Please submit your orders here. Parents will be billed through FACTS. If you have any questions, please contact the Primary School Office, 773-702-4543. It would be wonderful to have 100 percent participation so that no one will feel left out when we pass out yearbooks at the end of the year.
If you would like to take care of Cookie over the summer, please let me know! We can divide the time between several homes if more than one family is interested. Cookie is a wonderful pet. One parent recently said after taking Cookie for spring break, " Cookie is so cuddly!"
SAVE THE DATE: Our spring potluck will be a breakfast on Friday, June 3rd from 7:30-9:00am.
